Runny Nose is a frequent complaint of a preschooler. Preschoolers get approx 9 to 11 colds a year means they have cold year around. Every kid go through this situation of non-stop runny nose for 7-15 days. This doesn’t mean that your kid have any problem, it’s a part of growing and building immunity.
Why Kids get frequent Cold / Runny Nose:
Kids immunity is immature and so they catch frequent colds. There are more than 200 different viruses cause the common cold and kids can develop immunity to only one of them at a time. To be immune to all cold viruses your kid would have to get all of those. Most preschoolers catch 9 to 12 colds per year.
The cause is as the kids grow they like to explore and want to know everything and they do it by touching everything, so it’s easy for kids to pick up a cold virus on their hands. Also kids put their dirty fingers in mouth or nose and the virus starts his work 🙂
Kids get sick more often in winter and rains because of cold air. Preschoolers spend more time indoors with same age kids who don’t know about hygiene and taking care while sneezing or coughing. When one kid coughs or sneeze, the cold spreads to other kids. You will never see a cold free preschool class you will find at least one kid with runny nose where viruses can spread more easily from one person to another.
So no need to worry if your 2 to 5-year-old kids get more cold. If your preschooler has runny nose daily or most days, but they are playing, eating, going to school, sleeping, then it is very likely that they do not have a chronic illness.
